Nepali Women and Politics

Following up to the Madheshi Women's National Conference, there was a meeting of the MWAF National Steering Committee in Kathmandu on 9 September.  At this meeting District Leaders formalized the first initiative of the MWAF - supporting Madheshi women's inclusion in the Constitutional Assembly Election.  On 10 September the MWAF National Steering Committee launched the "Win with Madheshi Women" campaign.  In addition to the introduction of the District Leaders and the reading of the MWAF Declaration and "Hamro Katha," the poster for the campaign was unveiled. (insert picture here and an image of the poster).

The "Win with Madheshi Women" campaign for political empowerment and inclusion includes 3 distinct objectives.

  1. Fighting for Madheshi Women Candidates
    • We are demanding that the political parties to put 50% Madheshi women candidates in strong constituencies on their FPTP candidate lists AND place 50% qualified Madheshi Women on the PR Lists & in PR seats.

  2. Educating Madheshi Women Voters
    • We are collaborating with other organizations to ensure Madheshi women are sufficiently educated about the CA elections, significance, and process.

  3. Providing Votes
    • We are working to encourage Madheshi women to vote to help elect female candidates and to support parties that include high numbers of Madheshi women on their candidate lists.
We now have district chapters in all 21 districts of the Terai with full-fledged steering committees conducting regular activities.
